Amsterdam is one hour of it. Beyond the canal belt: Haarlem’s quieter grid, dune-backed North Sea beaches, the old Zuiderzee ports and the flat green light of tulip season — twenty-three real bases, rates we have checked ourselves.

Four Noord-Hollands 01 / 04
01The canal belt

Concentric water, four hundred years old.

Amsterdam is the centre and Haarlem is the escape valve fifteen minutes west. Stay on the ring rather than in it: the Jordaan, Oost, or a Haarlem gable for half the rate.

02The North Sea edge

Dunes, a lighthouse, and the wind off the water.

A wall of dunes runs from Zandvoort up past Egmond to Den Helder and the Texel ferry. Thirty minutes from Centraal you are on an empty beach in March.

03The old Zuiderzee

Ports that lost their sea and kept their gables.

Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Edam and Volendam faced open water until the dyke closed in 1932. Now they face the flat IJsselmeer, with steam trains and ferries between them.

04The polder & the bloom

Drained land that turns scarlet for a fortnight.

The Beemster was pumped dry in 1612 and is UNESCO-listed for it. Late April the bulb fields behind it go red, yellow and white, and every room within a train ride books out.

01 Dispatch Written from the trains, not from a press pack.

Most itineraries treat Noord-Holland as a suburb of Amsterdam and stop there. It is a full province — and nobody sees all of it by accident.

The concentric canal belt sits at the centre. The North Sea dunes run from Zandvoort up past Egmond to Texel. The old Zuiderzee ports — Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Edam — face the flat water of the IJsselmeer, and the polders turn scarlet and yellow every April when the tulip fields open.

Come for the museums and the canal cruise in high season, or for a shoulder-month train loop through Haarlem, Alkmaar and the cheese towns when Amsterdam’s rates halve. Either way you need somewhere real to sleep — not a canal-view room priced for a stag weekend. That is what this page is for.
