One week in Noord-Holland

Seven days that pair three nights in Amsterdam with four nights of North Sea beaches, cheese towns and Texel island — total transit under $80.

Days 1-3: Amsterdam base

Anchor in De Pijp or Oud-West rather than the center — nightly rates drop from around $180 to $110 and tram 3 or 12 gets you anywhere in 15 minutes. Use day one for the canal ring and Jordaan; day two for Museumplein plus Vondelpark; day three for the eastern docklands, NEMO ($19) and the Micropia museum ($17).

Dinner in the neighborhoods: Bar Fisk on Ceintuurbaan for grilled fish ($22 mains), Café de Reiger in the Jordaan for stamppot ($16), or Foodhallen for stall-hopping under $15.

Day 4: Haarlem and Zandvoort

Trains to Haarlem run every 10 minutes and take 15 ($5). Wander Grote Markt, the Frans Hals Museum ($18) and De Adriaan windmill. Continue on the same line another 10 minutes to Zandvoort aan Zee — Noord-Holland's main beach town with strandtenten (beach bars) open May to October. Rent a chair for $6.

Days 5-6: Alkmaar and Texel

Move base to Den Helder or the island of Texel. Stop at Alkmaar on Friday morning (April to September) for the cheese market at Waagplein — it starts at 10:00 and is free. Continue north to Den Helder (90 minutes from Amsterdam), then a 20-minute ferry to Texel ($3.50 foot passenger).

Texel rewards two nights. Rent a bike at Verhuurbedrijf Heijne for $12 a day and loop the dunes, Ecomare seal sanctuary ($16), and De Koog beach. Sleep in Den Burg at Hotel Bos & Duin from $95.

Day 7: Zaanse Schans and return

Ferry back to Den Helder, train south with a stop at Zaandijk for the windmills. Back in Amsterdam by evening — most flights leave Schiphol next morning, and the airport train is $5.90 and 15 minutes from Centraal.

Questions answered

Should I rent a car for a week in Noord-Holland?

No. Trains and buses cover everywhere in this itinerary. Amsterdam parking is $8 an hour and most hotels charge extra for garages.

Is Texel worth two nights?

Yes if you like cycling, beaches, or seafood. One night feels rushed given the ferry logistics.

When does the Alkmaar cheese market run?

Fridays 10:00-13:00 from the first Friday of April through the first Friday of September. It does not run in winter.

How much should I budget for a week?

Around $1,400 solo mid-range, excluding flights: $110/night lodging, $50/day food, $80 transit, $150 museums.
