Zandvoort is Amsterdam's beach. Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal run half-hourly and take 30 minutes; on a hot Saturday every seat is full of people carrying beach chairs. The town itself is a 1960s-era resort — not pretty, but functional, with a long boulevard, a strip of beach clubs, and dunes running north to Bloemendaal. The beach itself is excellent: wide, clean, and easy to walk for kilometres. At 9pm on a July evening the boulevard is packed and the beach clubs (Woodstock, Republiek, Beachclub Tien) are pumping until 1am.
The Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort in late August/early September triples every hotel rate and books out six months ahead — check the calendar before you plan anything. Outside peak season (October to April) the town is dead, half the beach clubs are dismantled, and you can walk kilometres of empty sand which is its own pleasure. This suits summer beach-goers and F1 fans. It does not suit anyone wanting a picturesque Dutch town — go to Haarlem for that and take bus 81 to the beach.

The boulevard hotels (Boulevard Paulus Loot, Boulevard Barnaart) get you a sea view for $110-$180 in summer. Streets one block back (Kerkstraat, Haltestraat) drop to $85-$130 for the same beach access. Skip anything east of the railway — you gain nothing. Book six months ahead for F1 weekend or forget it; rates hit $400+ and everything fills. Grand Hotel Amrâth is the top-end option in a historic building on the boulevard.

- Dune walk to BloemendaalEnter the Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland from Boulevard Paulus Loot, follow signed trails through the dunes to Bloemendaal aan Zee, about 4 km one way. Free. Wild rabbits everywhere, occasional Highland cattle. Bus 81 back.
- Circuit Zandvoort track tourBurgemeester van Alphenstraat 108, on non-race days you can drive laps in your own car for $85, or take a track tour for $20. Book online. The famous banked turns are worth seeing even if you do not care about F1.
- Fish stall on the boulevardVishandel Zeebanket at the north end of the boulevard, near the pier. Fresh kibbeling (fried cod pieces) $8, herring $5 raw with onions. Open 11am-8pm summer, closes earlier off-season. Better than any of the restaurants.
Getting there & around
Start at the south end of Boulevard Barnaart where the beach clubs cluster, walk north along the boulevard past the casino and the water tower, out onto the pier, back down onto the beach itself, then up into the dunes via the marked path near Boulevard Paulus Loot, looping back through pine woods to the town.
Direct trains from Amsterdam Centraal every 30 minutes, 30 minutes journey, $6.50. Extra trains on hot summer weekends. From Haarlem, 12 minutes, $3.20, every 15 minutes. From Schiphol, change at Haarlem or Amsterdam Sloterdijk, 45 minutes total. Bus 80 and 81 connect Zandvoort with Bloemendaal aan Zee and Overveen. The town is walkable — station to beach is 400 metres. Parking is expensive and full by 11am on hot days.

Is Zandvoort worth staying overnight or just a day trip?
Day trip from Amsterdam or Haarlem for most people — trains are fast and cheap. Stay overnight if you want the beach club evening scene (July-August only), or if you are here for F1 weekend and paid the surge rate anyway. In shoulder season one night is enough to enjoy a sunset dinner and a morning dune walk.
When is the F1 Dutch Grand Prix and how does it affect hotels?
