Zaandam is where cost-conscious Amsterdam visitors actually sleep. The train from Centraal takes twelve minutes and runs every ten minutes until 1am. The town itself is unglamorous — a workaday Dutch place with a shopping street (Gedempte Gracht), the extravagant stacked-Dutch-house Inntel Hotel, and the Zaans Museum. But it is the launching pad for Zaanse Schans, the working windmill village on the Zaan river four kilometres north, and that is what most people are here for.
This suits budget travellers doing Amsterdam and anyone with a car who wants free parking. It does not suit anyone looking for evening atmosphere — the centre closes at 6pm on weekdays, and after that you have chain restaurants and the hotel bar. Zaanse Schans itself is a working museum with actual millers, but by 4pm the tour buses have left and it becomes genuinely magical for the last hour before closing. Do not go at 11am on a Saturday in July unless you enjoy crowds.

Near Zaandam station is where most of the value is — the Inntel Hotel and Bastion cluster within 200 metres, $78-$130 for a proper room, breakfast included at most. Twelve minutes to Amsterdam Centraal by train. If you want to be closer to Zaanse Schans, stay in Koog aan de Zaan or Zaandijk (one train stop north), quieter but with fewer restaurants. Avoid Wormerveer and further north — you gain nothing and lose the easy commute.

- Boat trip on the ZaanRederij De Schans from the windmill village pier, $14 for 50 minutes past working mills and old paint factories. Runs April-October, hourly. Better than the walking crowds on a summer Saturday.
Getting there & around
From the museum entrance walk out along Kalverringdijk with the mills on your right and the Zaan on your left — De Kat (paint mill), De Zoeker (oil mill), Het Jonge Schaap (sawmill, the working one), De Bonte Hen (oil), and De Huisman (mustard). Cross the bridge at the end, walk back along the west bank past the old workers' houses, ending at the cheese-making demonstration.
Zaandam is on the Amsterdam-Alkmaar mainline. From Amsterdam Centraal, 12 minutes, $3.60, every 10 minutes until 1am, then hourly night train. From Schiphol, change at Sloterdijk, total 25 minutes, $7. Zaanse Schans is bus 391 from the station (every 15 min, 20 min, $3) or Koog-Zaandijk train station and a 15-minute walk. Do not drive to Zaanse Schans on weekends — parking fills by 10am.

Is Zaandam a good base for Amsterdam?
For budget yes — you will save $50-$80 a night versus central Amsterdam and the train is genuinely fast. For atmosphere no — Zaandam has no evening life to speak of. If you want to eat and drink late, you commute back from Amsterdam and that is fine, trains run until 1am and there is a night train hourly.
Can I do Zaanse Schans as an evening thing?
The mills close 4:30-5pm but the village itself stays open and free to wander until dusk. Between 5pm and 8pm in summer it is genuinely empty and lovely. Bring dinner supplies — the on-site restaurants close with the mills.
