Den Helder is where you go to catch the ferry to Texel. It is a working naval town at the extreme northern tip of the Noord-Holland peninsula, with the Netherlands' main naval base, a decent maritime museum (Marinemuseum, with actual submarines and warships you can climb through), and an old fort by the sea. The town itself was heavily bombed in WWII and rebuilt without much charm — do not come expecting canal-house prettiness. It is functional, salty, and honest about what it is.
This suits people making the Texel crossing (ferry from 't Horntje, 20 minutes, half-hourly) and anyone interested in maritime and military history. The Marinemuseum and the neighbouring Nationaal Reddingmuseum Dorus Rijkers (lifeboat museum) are both good. It does not suit anyone looking for atmospheric Dutch small-town charm — that is not this. One night before or after Texel is the right stay length; two if you want to see both museums and the fort properly.

Around the harbour and Willemsoord (the old naval yard, now partly restaurant-and-museum quarter) is the interesting bit, $80-$130. Grand Hotel Beatrix is the historic option. Near the ferry terminal at 't Horntje there is one hotel — useful for early sailings. Cheaper business hotels near the station drop to $65-$85 and are 15 minutes' walk from Willemsoord. Avoid anywhere in the postwar residential zones — soulless and no reason to be there.

- Marinemuseum with submarinesHoofdgracht 3, Willemsoord, $16. You go inside a real submarine (the Tonijn), a minesweeper, and a WWI ram. Two hours easily. Combines well with the lifeboat museum next door, $12 combined ticket.
- Fort KijkduinAdmiraal Verhuellplein 1, north of the town on the coast. Napoleonic-era coastal fort with a WWII bunker complex and an aquarium in the casemates. $14. Bus 33 from the station.
- Willemsoord old naval yardFree to walk in, restaurants and cafés in the old workshops. Nautisch College boats moored in the basin. Sunday afternoons there are often steam-powered events. The Willem Barentsz café-restaurant in one of the sheds is a solid dinner spot.
- Huisduinen dunes and lighthouseTwo km west, the Lange Jaap lighthouse (currently under long restoration but visible) rises over 60 m — the tallest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe. Walk out through Huisduinen village and the Falga dunes. Free, always open.
Getting there & around
Start at the station, walk down Beatrixstraat to Willemsoord, wander through the old naval yard past the moored museum ships and the dry docks, follow the Nieuwe Diep waterfront out to the modern naval base fence (as far as you can go), and back through the town via Spoorstraat and Molenplein.
Intercity trains from Amsterdam Centraal every 30 minutes, 75 minutes, $14. From Schiphol change at Sloterdijk, 90 minutes. The train terminates a few hundred metres from the Texel ferry terminal — a shuttle bus (line 33) runs between the station and the ferry. TESO ferry to Texel runs every 30 minutes from 6:30am to 9:30pm in summer, $6 return foot passenger, $50 with car. The town is walkable but bus 33 covers the length of it.

How much time do I need in Den Helder before the Texel ferry?
None if you time it — trains from Amsterdam connect to the ferry with 15-20 minutes to spare. If you want to see the Marinemuseum, add half a day. An overnight is only worth it if you have missed the last ferry or want to see the museums properly without rushing.
Can I leave my car in Den Helder while visiting Texel?
Yes and yes you should. The 't Horntje ferry terminal has long-term parking at $15 a day. Cars on Texel cost $50 return and Texel has excellent local buses (Texelhopper on-demand). Save the money and take the ferry as a foot passenger.
