Friday: Amsterdam highlights, sleep in Haarlem
Arrive Schiphol and take the train direct to Amsterdam Centraal (17 minutes). Drop bags at the station lockers (€8/day) and spend the afternoon on the Rijksmuseum (€22.50, book a 14:00 slot online) and a slow walk through the Jordaan. Dinner at Moeders on Rozengracht for stamppot and hutspot. At 22:00, take the 10-minute train to Haarlem and sleep at Hotel ML on the Klokhuisplein, where doubles run €140 versus €280 for the equivalent in Amsterdam.
This trade-off is the entire reason to base outside the capital. Haarlem trains run until 01:00 and start again at 05:30, and you wake up in a market square with actual daylight instead of a Damrak hotel window facing a wall.
Saturday: Zaanse Schans and Waterland
Train Haarlem to Zaandijk Zaanse Schans via Sloterdijk (35 minutes total). Do the windmills 09:30 to 11:30, then continue to Amsterdam Centraal and take bus 315 to Broek in Waterland for lunch at De Witte Swaen. Continue by bus to Marken for the afternoon, then ferry to Volendam for dinner (paling, smoked eel, from Smit-Bokkum). Back to Haarlem by 22:00.
Sunday: Alkmaar or Texel, sleep near your flight
If flying home Sunday evening, do Alkmaar (36 minutes from Haarlem) with the cheese market if Friday failed you, or the Beatles Museum and Grote Kerk otherwise. If you have Sunday night free, push north to Den Helder (2h from Haarlem) and ferry to Texel (20 minutes, €3.50 walk-on). Sleep at Hotel Opduin in De Koog on the dunes, or Grand Hotel Opduin's cheaper sister property in Den Burg. Fly out Monday from Schiphol via the direct train from Den Helder (2h 15min).
Questions answered
Is Haarlem really cheaper than Amsterdam?
Yes, by 30-50% for equivalent 3 and 4-star hotels. A 15-minute train ride separates them and runs every 10 minutes.
Can I skip Amsterdam entirely?
You can, and some travellers do. But the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are genuinely worth 3-4 hours even if you dislike big cities.
