Where to stay in Enkhuizen: Zuiderzeemuseum base

Enkhuizen rooms average €95-140, the Zuiderzeemuseum is a 15-minute walk from the station, and Amsterdam Centraal is exactly one hour by direct train.

Who books Enkhuizen

Enkhuizen is smaller and quieter than Hoorn, and that's the whole appeal. The old town between the Drommedaris and the Westerstraat feels like a 17th-century stage set that people still live in. The Zuiderzeemuseum — an open-air recreation of a vanished fishing culture — deserves half a day and is one of the best museums in Noord-Holland. Sailors like Enkhuizen because the marina is huge and the Markermeer starts at the harbour wall.

It doesn’t suit day-trippers to Amsterdam (one hour each way eats your day) or anyone who wants a lively evening — most restaurants shut kitchens by 21:30 and the town is quiet by 23:00.

Where within town

Anywhere in the old town works; the whole place is 15 minutes across. The nicest streets are around the Zuiderhavendijk and Wierdijk. Hotels near the station are convenient for the ferry to Stavoren but 10 minutes from the good parts.

Good to know

Questions answered

Is the Zuiderzeemuseum open year-round?

The indoor museum yes, the outdoor village typically April through October. Check the calendar — off-season is much less rewarding here.

Can I take a ferry from Enkhuizen?

Yes, seasonal passenger ferries run to Stavoren in Friesland and to Medemblik. Both are lovely day-trip options in summer.
