The 6 best historic towns in Noord-Holland, ranked

The three that reward a full day

1. Haarlem — bigger than any of the others, with an intact medieval street plan, the Grote Kerk with its Müller organ (played by both Mozart and Handel), and two serious museums. It wins because it's a working city, not a preserved one. 2. Enkhuizen — the Zuiderzeemuseum's open-air section is a reassembled village of relocated 17th-century buildings, and the harbour is still a functioning fishing port. 3. Hoorn — same era as Enkhuizen but larger; the Roode Steen square, the Westfries Museum and the harbour front are all within 400 metres of each other.

All three are on direct trains from Amsterdam — Haarlem in 15 minutes, Hoorn in 40, Enkhuizen in an hour. Enkhuizen and Hoorn can be paired in one long day.

The three that are half-day trips

4. Naarden — the star-shaped fortress town is unique in the country, and the whole pentagon fits in 90 minutes of walking. 5. Edam — small, walkable in 45 minutes, best combined with Volendam. The wooden bascule bridges and the Grote Kerk stained glass are the specific things to see. 6. Muiden — really a village around the castle (Muiderslot), but the harbour and the medieval church put it just above pure day-trip status.

Not on the list: Amsterdam itself (obvious) and Alkmaar (the market matters more than the town, though the town is fine). Purmerend and Beverwijk are historic but their centres have been over-modernised to make the cut.
