Who Marken suits
Marken is a former island in the Markermeer connected to the mainland by a single causeway since 1957. It's tiny — you can walk the village in 20 minutes — and the appeal is the evening when day-trippers have gone and you have wooden houses on poles, a working harbour and the lake to yourself. Guests staying overnight see a different place from the daytime coach visitors.
It doesn’t suit anyone needing choice — there are perhaps half a dozen B&Bs and small hotels total, so book weeks ahead in season. It also doesn’t suit non-drivers who want spontaneity; buses to Amsterdam run every 30 minutes at peak but hourly in the evening and stop early.
The practical bit
Everything on Marken is walkable from anywhere else on Marken. The Havenbuurt and Kerkbuurt are the two main clusters. Parking is only at the edge of the village (visitors' car park) — locals and guests use permits.
