Who Volendam suits
Volendam is honest about what it is: a former fishing village that has leaned hard into tourism, with a harbour front full of paling-eating locals and photo-op costumes. It works surprisingly well as a base for the Waterland loop — you can ferry to Marken, cycle to Edam in 20 minutes and reach Amsterdam by frequent bus. Evenings after the day-trip coaches leave are the best part; the harbour empties and it becomes a normal Dutch village again.
It doesn’t suit anyone who wants an unspoilt experience — the Havenbuurt is a souvenir gauntlet by day. And it doesn’t suit train travellers; there's no station, only buses.
Where in town
