The cheapest months to visit Noord-Holland (and what you sacrifice)
Mid-January to mid-February and mid-November each save 40-55% versus summer, but you lose 5-6 hours of daylight and half the terraces.
The four cheap windows
In order: (1) 7-30 January delivers the absolute low, with Amsterdam 3-stars from €85 and canal 4-stars from €140. (2) 1-13 February is nearly as cheap before the crokusvakantie bump, same price range. (3) 5-25 November drops rooms after the autumn shoulder ends and before the Light Festival crowds kick in — €95-120 for Amsterdam 3-stars. (4) Early to mid-December weekdays (not weekends), €100-135, but weekends jump for Light Festival.
Outside Amsterdam the savings are less dramatic because Haarlem, Alkmaar and Hoorn already sit at €70-90 in low season. Texel and the coast drop hardest — Texel guesthouses from €85 in January vs €200+ in July. Zandvoort is nearly closed in January but rooms cost €90 if you find one.
What you give up
Daylight is the real cost. January delivers about 8 hours vs summer's 16. Sunset at 16:30 means museums by day and hotel bar by evening. Half the beach restaurants close, Keukenhof is shut, Alkmaar cheese market pauses November to March, and the working windmills at Zaanse Schans need wind that quieter winter days don’t provide. Some Michelin-starred restaurants close for two-week breaks in January.
What you keep: the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank, Stedelijk, EYE, Hermitage, all open normal hours. Bike rental works year-round. Trains and buses run full schedules. Brown cafés are cosier in winter than any other time — Café Chris on Bloemstraat and Café 't Papeneiland on Prinsengracht are peak January experiences. Bring waterproofs and accept the dark.

Is January really 40% cheaper than June?
For Amsterdam mid-range hotels, yes — sometimes 45-55% cheaper. A €190 June room typically drops to €95-105 in January. Flights are also 20-30% cheaper. The saving is smaller for hostels (already low) and less consistent for luxury hotels, which discount less.
What's the single best week for value with the least sacrifice?
Second week of March. Rooms still low (€105-135 Amsterdam 3-stars), daylight already at 11-12 hours, terraces starting to open on warm days, all museums open, and you’re one week before Keukenhof opens so no tulip-driven inflation yet.
