Day 1: Haarlem to Enkhuizen via the coast
Pick up the car in Haarlem, not Amsterdam (rentals are 20% cheaper and you avoid the city's €7.50/hour parking). Head north on the N208 through the Bollenstreek if it is April, or straight up the N9 through Egmond aan Zee, Bergen, and Schoorl. Stop at the Schoorlse Duinen for the highest dunes in the country (54 metres). Lunch in Bergen at Restaurant Merlet. Continue via Alkmaar to Hoorn on the N247, staying west of the A7.
The point of a driving route here is precisely the small roads: the Westfriese Omringdijk between Hoorn and Enkhuizen (30 km, signposted brown) runs on top of a medieval sea dyke with polder on one side and IJsselmeer on the other. Speed limit is 60 and you will average 40. Sleep in Enkhuizen at Hotel Restaurant Die Drie Haringhe on the old harbour.
Day 2: Enkhuizen back via the Afsluitdijk detour
If you have never driven the Afsluitdijk, add it: from Enkhuizen head north to Den Oever and drive the 32 km causeway to Friesland and back (skip if pressed for time; it is dramatic but repetitive). Otherwise, head south from Enkhuizen via the Markermeerdijken to Edam (45 minutes on the dyke road). Lunch in Edam at De Fortuna. Continue to Volendam, Monnickendam and Marken via the causeway, then swing west through Broek in Waterland to Zaanse Schans.
End the loop in Zaandam at the Inntel Hotel, whose stacked-house facade is worth seeing even if you sleep elsewhere. Total driving is about 180 km with 5.5 hours behind the wheel spread over two days. Petrol runs €22-28 depending on the car.

Is driving in Noord-Holland worth it?
For the dyke roads and rural Waterland, yes. For Amsterdam, Haarlem or Zaanse Schans, no. Park at your first rural stop and use the train for city days.
Where should I park overnight?
