The window
Tulip season is roughly March 20 to May 15, peaking mid-April to early May. Keukenhof gardens (technically Zuid-Holland but 30 min from Amsterdam) is open exactly for those 8 weeks. Tickets $25, timed entry, book 2 weeks ahead in April. The gardens are curated and gorgeous but they are NOT the wild fields you’ve seen on Instagram.
The actual fields
For the vast striped fields, drive or cycle north from Alkmaar through the Kop van Noord-Holland — specifically the area around Sint Maartensvlotbrug and Anna Paulowna. Peak bloom is late April, and by mid-May farmers behead the flowers (to strengthen bulbs) so you can miss it fast. Rent a bike in Alkmaar and follow the Tulip Route ($15 map at any VVV info office).
Rules of the fields
Do NOT walk into fields — they’re commercial crops and farmers are increasingly hostile. Stay on paths and roads. Photograph from the edge. The Bollenstreek Bloemencorso flower parade (late April) is a genuine spectacle if timing works — floats made entirely of hyacinths.

Is Keukenhof worth the price?
Yes if you’ve never been, once. $25 buys a day in the best-curated gardens in the country. Come at opening (8am) to avoid tour buses.
Can I see tulips outside peak?
Late March = crocuses and daffodils. Mid-May = late tulips only. Peak is 3 weeks around April 25.
