Amsterdam public transit
GVB runs trams, buses, metro and ferries. Since 2023 you tap on and tap off with any contactless bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay — no more OV-chipkaart or paper tickets needed. Single ride works out to $3.60. A 24-hour GVB pass is $9.40, 48 hours $15, 72 hours $20. Trams are frequent (every 5-8 minutes daytime); metro covers less of the tourist center but is fast for outer trips.
Trains between towns
NS runs the intercity network. Amsterdam to Haarlem $5.20, to Zaanse Schans $4.50, to Alkmaar $8.80, to Den Helder $14.50. All accept contactless — tap the gate posts marked with your bank's logo. Trains run every 10-30 minutes 6:00-24:00. Night trains hourly on major lines. Don’t buy from the counter — machines and taps are faster.
Bikes
MacBike, A-Bike and Yellow Bike rent to tourists ($14-18/day). Bike theft is real — always use the built-in wheel lock plus a chain, and never leave bikes overnight in the center. OV-fiets is the rental scheme at train stations ($5/day) but requires a Dutch bank card. Ride on the red bike paths, signal turns, and give trams the right of way. Cyclists don’t stop for you — you stop for them.
Cars: don’t
Amsterdam parking is $8/hour on street and permits are locals-only in the center. Rent only if you’re heading to Texel, the far north, or beach towns off the train network. Sixt at Centraal is $60-90/day. For most day trips, the train wins on time and cost.

How do I get from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?
Train from the airport is $5.90 and 15 minutes to Centraal, every 10 minutes. Uber is $45-60. Bus 397 is $8.
