Muiden is a small village 15 km east of Amsterdam on the IJmeer, dominated by the 13th-century Muiderslot — the best-preserved medieval castle in the Netherlands, with a moat, round corner towers, drawbridges, and period interiors. It is one of the top day-trip targets from Amsterdam and gets crowded midday in summer, but by 4pm the tour groups have left and the village returns to being a quiet harbour town where yachts moor for the night on their way to the IJsselmeer.
This suits people who want to see one great castle and a pleasant Dutch harbour village. It does not suit longer stays — Muiden is small, quiet, and after the castle closes there is not much to do beyond the harbour cafés and a walk along the dyke. One night is right; two if you want to combine with Naarden (five km east, a star-shaped fortress town). The Groene Kade harbour is genuinely lovely at dusk when the yachts are lit and the castle silhouette rises over them.

Very limited — five or six hotels total. Hotel Graaf Floris on Herengracht is the picturesque canal-house option, $110-$170. A couple of B&Bs on the Groene Kade. If Muiden is full try Weesp (15 minutes by bus) or Naarden. Book two weeks ahead for summer weekends. The village is 300 metres end to end, everything is walking distance.

- Pampus island fortFerry from Muiden harbour, $22 including the ferry and the fort. 1890s artificial island fort in the IJmeer, part of the Amsterdam defence line. Runs weekends April-October plus weekdays in summer. Half a day.
- Dyke walk to NaardenFollow the Naardertrekvaart canal path or the IJmeer dyke east to Naarden, 5 km, flat, mostly open landscape. Naarden's star-shaped fortress walls are a UNESCO-adjacent site. Bus 320 back if you do not want to walk both ways.
- Grand Café De DoelenHerengracht 45, terrace on the Vecht river across from the castle. Bitterballen $9, mains $22-$30. Kitchen closes 9:30pm. The best table in the village and often fully booked on summer evenings.
Getting there & around
Start at the castle, cross the Vecht via the drawbridge, walk into the village along Herengracht past the gabled merchants' houses, out to the Groene Kade harbour with its yachts and the view back to the castle, up onto the IJmeer sea dyke for the wide-water view, and back through the village via Kerkstraat past the Grote Kerk.
No train. Bus 320 (Bravo) from Amsterdam Amstel or Amsterdam Zuid, every 15 minutes, 25-35 minutes, $6. Also stops in Weesp (a nearby train station). From Schiphol, train to Weesp then bus 320, total 45 minutes. Ferry to Pampus from Muiden harbour is seasonal. Parking in the village is limited; use the visitor lot on Naarderstraat, $7 a day. Bikes are easy — the coastal cycle path from Amsterdam is 20 km, flat, well-marked.

Absolutely — most visitors do it that way. Bus 320 from Amsterdam Amstel, 30 minutes, castle for two hours, harbour lunch, back for dinner in Amsterdam. Stay overnight only if you want to see Pampus fort as well (another half day) or combine with Naarden.
Is the castle worth $18?
