The top four
1. Rijksmuseum — the Night Watch, the Vermeers, the dolls' houses and an Asian pavilion most people skip. Book a 09:00 slot. 2. Van Gogh Museum — smaller than you think, but the chronological hang from Nuenen to Auvers is the best single-artist collection in Europe. Timed entry only. 3. Stedelijk — post-war modern art the other two don’t cover, and rarely queued. Malevich, De Kooning, Mondrian's late New York work. 4. Anne Frank House — I’ve ranked it fourth because the queue and pace management make it more stressful than moving; still essential once.
These four are the ones I’d defend to a sceptical visitor. Anything below is optional depending on your interests. The Museumkaart pays for itself at three visits and is worth it if you’re staying a week.
Five through eight
5. Het Scheepvaartmuseum — the maritime museum, with a full-scale VOC ship replica alongside. 6. Museum Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder — a clandestine Catholic church hidden in a canal-house attic, one of the strangest interiors in the country. 7. Foam — photography, small and sharply curated, changing shows. 8. Moco — I’m ranking Banksy-and-Instagram-photo-ops last on purpose; skip it unless you’ve done everything else.
Notable omissions: Madame Tussauds and the Sex Museum aren’t museums, and the Body Worlds franchise isn’t Amsterdam-specific. The Rembrandt House is fine but thin — go if you’ve already done the Rijksmuseum and want more.
Questions answered
Is the Museumkaart worth it for a short trip?
At €75 for a year, yes if you’ll hit three museums. Rijks + Van Gogh + Stedelijk already covers it, and it works across the whole country including Frans Hals in Haarlem.
Which museum has the shortest queue?
Stedelijk almost always. Foam is essentially walk-in. The Rijksmuseum has no walk-up queue if you book online — the queue is for people who didn’t.
