Hotels near the tulip fields in Noord-Holland, ranked

Nine hotels within 20 minutes of the northern Noord-Holland bulb fields — where the flowers bloom later than Lisse and it stays quieter.

The Kop van Noord-Holland bulb belt

Most tulip tourists go to Keukenhof in Zuid-Holland and never realise Noord-Holland's own bulb fields around Anna Paulowna and the Wieringermeer bloom about two weeks later, are open to the roads, and have no €22 entry fee. For a base, Grand Hotel Opduin on Texel (across the ferry) is the atmospheric pick: 20 minutes from the northern fields, rooms from €175. Landgoed De Horst near Schagen is a converted country estate with 12 rooms from €145.

Hotel Igesz in Schagen itself is a straightforward town hotel from €110 with breakfast — Schagen is the market town for the whole bulb region and has Thursday farmers' markets worth timing. Fletcher Hotel Nautisch Kwartier in Huizen is further south but 40 minutes from the fields and cheaper (€120).

Amsterdam bases and the honest truth

For most visitors, staying in Amsterdam and taking a day trip works better than dedicating a night to the bulb fields. Trains to Schagen run hourly from Amsterdam Centraal (65 minutes), and rental cars from Schiphol are €50/day. If you’re driving, the Bloementocht signed route from Anna Paulowna is 30km and doable in half a day.

Bloom timing is the whole game: crocuses in mid-March, daffodils late March, hyacinths early April, tulips mid-April to early May in Noord-Holland (later than Lisse). The Wieringermeer polder near Middenmeer is the biggest concentration and least touristed. Skip any hotel advertising 'tulip views' — the fields rotate crops and this year's tulips are next year's onions. Aim for location, not window.

Good to know

Questions answered

When exactly do the Noord-Holland tulips bloom?

Peak is typically 20 April to 5 May, running about two weeks behind Lisse. Check bloeiradar.nl a few days before travelling — bloom dates shift with the weather.

Can I visit the fields freely?

Yes — the fields are along public roads and you can walk the verges. Do not walk into the rows; farmers lose thousands per damaged plant. The Bloementocht cycle route is designed exactly for this.
