The good months
Late April to mid-May: tulips, mild weather (13-18°C), longer days, and Keukenhof is open. This is peak beauty. September is the sleeper hit — warm North Sea (still 17°C), harvest food, and cheese markets still running. Late May and early June are excellent but crowded. June solstice light lasts until nearly 11pm.
The bad months
Mid-July to mid-August: everyone in Europe is on holiday, hotel prices peak at +40%, and Amsterdam is a traffic jam of tour groups. November and February are grey, wet, dark by 4:30pm, and most coastal spots feel closed. Only come then if you want quiet museums (which are genuinely great in low season) and cheap hotels.
Events worth timing
King's Day (April 27) is Amsterdam's biggest party — orange chaos, 800,000 people, and the best day of the year if you’re up for it. Pride (early August) fills every hotel. Sail Amsterdam (next: 2025 or 2030) brings tall ships to the IJ. Amsterdam Light Festival (late November to mid-January) redeems winter.
