Why May often beats June
May has the best weather-to-crowd ratio in Noord-Holland. The trees are fully leafed, café terraces are open across every square from the Nieuwmarkt to Alkmaar's Waagplein, and daylight runs 05:45 to 21:15 by month's end. Rain still falls, roughly one day in three, but showers pass in an hour. Water temperature at Zandvoort hits 12-14°C — swimmable for the brave.
The Bevrijdingsfestival on 5 May (Liberation Day) puts free music in most cities; Haarlem's version on the Grote Markt is excellent. Meivakantie school break falls late April to early May (25 April - 10 May 2026 in the north region), so the first ten days are busier with Dutch families, especially on Texel and at family-friendly coastal spots.
What things cost and what's open
After King's Day the market cools briefly. Second week of May: €130-160 for Amsterdam 3-stars, €190-240 for canal 4-stars. By month's end it climbs again toward summer levels. Haarlem €120, Alkmaar €90, Zandvoort €110-140. Texel from €120 midweek in a guesthouse; book weekends four weeks out.
Everything is open. Cheese market runs Fridays 10:00-13:00 in Alkmaar. Keukenhof closes 10 May. Zaanse Schans working windmills spin most days. Circuit Zandvoort has multiple race weekends — check dates before booking Zandvoort accommodation. Ferry to Texel runs half-hourly from Den Helder in daylight hours. The North Sea beaches at Bergen, Egmond and IJmuiden are pleasant but still empty on weekdays.

When exactly do the terraces open?
Café terraces have been running since March on warm days, but May is when they stay open every evening. Amsterdam's Museumplein and Haarlem's Grote Markt fill by 16:00 on any 15°C+ day. The Jordaan's Café 't Smalle terrace on Egelantiersgracht is the postcard version.
Is Hemelvaart a problem for travel?
Ascension Day (14 May 2026) plus the following Friday creates a four-day weekend. Trains and coastal roads get busy, Dutch families take beach breaks, and Texel and Bergen sell out. Amsterdam actually empties a little as locals leave the city.
