Direct-on-the-sand stays
Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is not this — don’t be fooled by the name. For actual beachfront, start with NH Zandvoort, which sits on the boulevard with sea-view rooms from around €180 off-season and €340 in July. Strandhotel Zandvoort is smaller, more Dutch-family in feel, and about 90 seconds' walk to the shoreline. Up in Egmond aan Zee, Hotel Zuiderduin has the biggest footprint on the coast with a genuine indoor pool overlooking the dunes; ask for the seaside wing, not the village wing.
In Bergen aan Zee, Nassau Bergen is the classic pick with wooden beach-shack character and rooms from €160. On Texel, Grand Hotel Opduin in De Koog is a five-minute walk to the beach through dunes; Paal 8 Hotel aan Zee actually has direct dune access. In IJmuiden, Hotel Augusta faces the pier and industrial harbour — atmospheric but not what most people mean by beach.
Season, trade-offs and what to book
The Noord-Holland coast is a North Sea coast: expect wind on 250 days a year, water temperatures peaking at 18°C in August, and shoulder seasons (May, September) that are frankly better value than July. A sea-view room in Zandvoort costs roughly double a park-side room in the same building — worth it in summer, questionable in November when it's dark by 4:30pm.
Zandvoort has trains every 30 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal (26 minutes direct in summer). Egmond and Bergen require a bus from Alkmaar station. Texel needs the TESO ferry from Den Helder (20 minutes, cars €38 return). If you want beach without the crowds, Egmond in May beats Zandvoort in August every time.
Questions answered
Is Zandvoort or Texel better for a beach hotel weekend?
Zandvoort for convenience — 30 minutes from Amsterdam by train, more restaurants. Texel for wildness and space, but you’re committing to a two-hour journey each way.
Can you swim in the North Sea here?
Yes, from June through September. Water is 16-18°C at peak, currents are manageable at guarded beaches, and Zandvoort, Bergen and Egmond all have lifeguards in summer.
