Where to stay in Edam: the quiet cheese-town option
Edam has about a dozen small hotels and B&Bs at €95-145, the Wednesday summer cheese market runs 10:30-12:30 in July and August, and Amsterdam is 30 minutes by bus 314.
Who Edam suits
Edam is what a lot of visitors hope Volendam will be — small, historic, actually lived in, and not overrun. The centre is a set of drawbridges, canals and 17th-century houses around the Damplein and Kaasmarkt. It's a smarter overnight base than Volendam three kilometres south, and a much better base than Amsterdam if your priority is Waterland cycling and villages.
It doesn’t suit travellers who want restaurants open late or a range of hotel styles — options are limited to a few boutique places and B&Bs, and kitchens close around 21:30. Non-drivers should confirm bus schedules; the last bus back from Amsterdam is around 00:30.
Where within Edam
Anywhere in the centre works — it's five minutes end to end. The Damplein area is the most photogenic; the streets north toward the fortifications are quieter. Cycling to Volendam takes 15 minutes on a flat protected path.
