Who Den Helder suits
Den Helder is a functional naval town at the northern tip of Noord-Holland, and most visitors stop here for one reason: catching the ferry to Texel. It works as a cheap overnight if you have an early ferry or a late arrival — the ferry terminal is a 5-minute walk or shuttle from the train station. The Marinemuseum and Fort Kijkduin are decent half-day attractions if you get stuck weather-bound.
It doesn’t suit anyone looking for charm — the town centre was heavily bombed in WWII and rebuilt plainly, and it doesn’t compete with Alkmaar or Hoorn on atmosphere. Nearly always, sleeping on Texel itself is nicer if you can afford it.
Placement in town
Hotels near the station and ferry terminal are the obvious pick — you don’t need to venture further. Huisduinen, the coastal suburb 3 km west, has a nicer setting near the dunes and lighthouse if you have a car.
