Who Zandvoort suits
Zandvoort is the beach for Amsterdam and Haarlem, and staying here makes sense in summer if beach time is your priority. The train from Amsterdam takes 30 minutes and drops you 200 metres from the sand. The town itself is a working seaside resort — not pretty, but functional, with the Circuit Zandvoort hosting the Dutch Grand Prix in late August (avoid or embrace, but book six months out).
It doesn’t suit off-season travellers looking for atmosphere — from November to March many restaurants close and the boulevard is bleak. It also doesn’t suit anyone wanting a Dutch historic old town; for that combine with a night in Haarlem 10 minutes inland.
Where along the coast
The seafront boulevard has the sea-view hotels but pays a premium. One street back is significantly cheaper for a 3-minute walk to the beach. Bloemendaal aan Zee, one train stop north, is quieter and has the famous summer beach clubs.

July and August only, really — water hits 18-19°C. June and September are for wetsuits or brave paddlers.
Should I avoid Grand Prix weekend?
Only if you’re not there for it. Prices triple, trains are packed and the town is closed to cars. The race is late August; check dates before booking.
