Who Hoorn suits
Hoorn is the pick for travellers who want West Frisian history — 17th-century VOC wealth, the Westfries Museum, the Hoofdtoren on the harbour — and who plan to explore Enkhuizen, Medemblik and the Markermeer coast. The old centre is compact and genuinely handsome, with a working harbour rather than a preserved one. The steam tram to Medemblik runs summer weekends and is a real attraction for kids.
It doesn’t suit people whose focus is Amsterdam — you’re 35 minutes out and trains thin to two an hour late evening. It also doesn’t have beach access; for that you’d choose Egmond, Bergen or Castricum on the North Sea side.
Where to sleep
Stay near the Rode Steen and the harbour — everything worth seeing is within 400 metres. Options are limited (a handful of 3-star hotels and B&Bs), so book earlier than you would for Amsterdam. The area around the station is fine but characterless.

Hoorn or Enkhuizen for a night?
Hoorn is bigger with more restaurants and easier trains. Enkhuizen is smaller and prettier with the Zuiderzeemuseum. Both are good; Hoorn is the safer default.
Is Hoorn on the coast?
On the Markermeer (freshwater lake), not the North Sea. It's a harbour town but you can’t swim in the sea from here.
