Who books Alkmaar
Alkmaar suits travellers who want a working Dutch town rather than a tourist bubble, and who plan day-trips to Bergen, Egmond aan Zee, Hoorn and the West Frisian coast. The old town inside the moat is genuinely lovely — canals, the Waag, the Grote Kerk — and you can walk it end-to-end in 20 minutes. Trains to Amsterdam run four times an hour and take 35-40 minutes, which makes it a plausible commuter base if Amsterdam and Haarlem prices scare you off.
It doesn’t suit anyone whose main plan is Amsterdam nightlife or the Rijksmuseum — you’ll spend two hours a day on trains. And outside Friday cheese-market mornings in high season, the town is calm to the point of sleepy.
Best pockets
Aim for hotels inside or just outside the singel around Mient, Verdronkenoord and Kanaalkade. Near Alkmaar station is fine for one night but a 10-minute walk from the good bits. Skip the Overdie neighbourhood south of the tracks.
