The top five
1. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam — the Vermeers, the Rembrandts and the reopened Gallery of Honour still outrank everything else in the province on a rainy day. 2. Zaanse Schans windmills — five working mills on the Zaan river, close enough to Amsterdam that skipping them is silly. 3. Cycling Texel end to end — 30 km of dunes, sheep farms and North Sea beach, ferry from Den Helder. 4. Keukenhof and the bulb fields (late March to mid-May only) — the one seasonal thing that's genuinely worth timing a trip around. 5. Hoorn and Enkhuizen by train — two Golden Age harbour towns most day-trippers miss.
The order reflects reliability across seasons and weather, not just headline fame. The Rijksmuseum works in February; Keukenhof does not. Texel needs a dry-ish day and half a weekend to make the ferry worthwhile, which is why it sits third rather than first.
Six through ten
6. Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem — smaller than the Rijks but the group portraits are unmatched. 7. Alkmaar cheese market on Friday mornings, April to September — touristy but genuinely old, and the town itself is pretty. 8. Zandvoort beach and the Amsterdam Waterleidingduinen behind it — 20 minutes by train from Amsterdam Centraal. 9. Muiderslot castle at Muiden — a real 13th-century moated castle, easy half-day trip. 10. Volendam and Marken by bus 315 — kitschy fishing villages, but the harbour walk in Marken is quietly lovely off-season.
Everything below 10 (Anne Frank House queues, Madame Tussauds, coffee-shop tourism) either has better versions elsewhere or is a poor use of a day. I would rather send someone to Enkhuizen than to a heaving Dam Square in August.

Can you do the top five in a week?
Comfortably, if you base in Amsterdam or Haarlem. Texel is the only one that needs an overnight to feel worth it; the other four are day trips of 4-8 hours each.
What's the single best day if I only have one?
Rijksmuseum in the morning, walk the Jordaan for lunch, train to Zaandam for the windmills in late afternoon. It hits three of the top ten in one day and costs under €30 in transport and tickets.
