When the season actually flips
Late March is when Noord-Holland switches on. Keukenhof opens for its eight-week run (19 March to 10 May in 2026), the clocks jump forward on 29 March, and the first field crocuses appear on the polders around Hillegom and Lisse. Field tulips are still three to four weeks away — anyone selling you a March tulip tour is showing you Keukenhof and greenhouse flowers. Amsterdam sees the first cruise ships dock, and the Vondelpark suddenly has picnickers on the first 15°C afternoon.
Weather stays honest: 6-11°C highs, wind still strong, rain on about a third of days. But a good March day is 14°C and blue-skied, and the low-angle light is superb for photography before the trees leaf out and hide the canal architecture.
Prices climbing fast
First half of March: €95-120 for Amsterdam 3-stars, €140-180 for canal-house 4-stars. From about 20 March onwards, when Keukenhof opens, everything jumps 20-30%. Book Lisse-area B&Bs by January or stay in Haarlem (30 minutes by bus 50) for €110-140. Zandvoort begins to wake up around Easter — the Circuit's DTM weekend and the first proper beach walkers.
Nearly everything reopens by mid-month. Working windmills at Zaanse Schans run whenever wind allows, the Alkmaar cheese market resumes the last Friday in March (27 March 2026), and Texel restaurants come back for the Easter weekend. Should I visit Keukenhof the week it opens?
Only if crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths interest you more than tulips. Peak tulip bloom inside Keukenhof is usually 15-25 April. Opening week is quieter (weekdays especially) and cheaper on flights and rooms, but the outdoor tulip fields nearby will be brown earth.
Is the North Sea coast worth visiting in March?
For walking, yes — Bergen aan Zee to Egmond aan Zee is a superb 7km beach walk, and you’ll have it mostly to yourself. For swimming or sitting on the beach, no. Water is 6°C and the wind is relentless.
