Where to stay in Zaandam: cheap Amsterdam base or a stop in itself?

Zaandam hotels run €85-130, trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in 11 minutes, and Zaanse Schans windmills are a 15-minute bus ride away.

Who Zaandam suits

Zaandam is the classic budget hack for Amsterdam. The station has direct sprinter trains every few minutes, the journey is 11 minutes, and a comparable 3-star room costs 40-50% less than in the capital. The town itself has been aggressively redeveloped around the station — the pixelated stacked-house Inntel Hotel is genuinely striking — but the historic Zaanse Schans windmill village is one bus stop north and worth the visit.

It doesn’t suit anyone looking for a charming old town — most of central Zaandam is modern. It also doesn’t suit late-night Amsterdam plans; the last train back is around 01:00 on weekends, earlier midweek.

Where within Zaandam

Stay within 500 metres of Zaandam station — that's where the hotels cluster and where trains, buses and restaurants converge. Further out you’re in residential neighbourhoods with little to do. Koog aan de Zaan and Zaandijk stations are closer to the windmills if that's your priority.

Good to know

Questions answered

Is Zaandam safe at night?

Yes, the station area is well-lit and busy until late. Standard city awareness applies, but this is a normal Dutch commuter town.

Zaandam or Haarlem as an Amsterdam base?

Haarlem if you want a nicer town, Zaandam if you want to be closer and slightly cheaper. Both trips are under 20 minutes.
