Spring (Mar-May): the best window
Late April is prime: tulips in the Keukenhof and the fields around Lisse (Zuid-Holland, 40 minutes from Amsterdam) hit peak roughly 20-30 April. King's Day (Koningsdag) on 27 April turns Amsterdam into one giant orange street party — book accommodation 3 months ahead. Weather is 12-18°C with rain showers. Museums and hotels charge peak prices.
Summer (Jun-Aug): warm and busy
Highs of 20-25°C, occasional 30+ heatwaves. Terraces are full, canals busy with boats, Vondelpark packed. Zandvoort beach comes alive. Downsides: hotels 20% above spring rates, queues at every major museum, and August cruise ship days dump 6,000 extra visitors on Dam Square. Book museums two weeks ahead.
Autumn (Sep-Nov): the sweet spot
September is arguably the best month — warm days, no cruise ships, hotels drop 15-25%. October brings foliage in Vondelpark and Amsterdamse Bos. November gets grey and rainy but hotel prices bottom out. The Amsterdam Light Festival kicks off late November running through mid-January.
Winter (Dec-Feb): dark and cheap
Daylight from 8:30 to 16:30 in December. Cold (0-6°C) with occasional canal-freezing snaps. Christmas markets on Museumplein and Rembrandtplein, and gluhwein everywhere. New Year's Eve fireworks are chaotic. Hotels drop to $95 in the center. February is the deadest month — perfect if you want museums empty.
