November: the low point begins
November is when Noord-Holland goes quiet. Daylight drops to 8 hours, temperatures 6-10°C, rain on half the days, and the first real cold snaps of the year. Sinterklaas arrives by steamboat somewhere in the country mid-November (the intocht rotates; Amsterdam usually hosts around 15-20 November). It's a genuine children's event with the Zwarte Piet debate still simmering. When does the Amsterdam Light Festival start?
Late November through mid-January. The 2026-27 edition runs approximately 28 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. The canal boat tour (€25) is the intended experience — walking the route works too but you miss the water-level views. Book boats a week ahead for weekends.
