The crokusvakantie effect
Noord-Holland's schools take a one-week break in mid to late February (14-22 February 2026 for the northern region). Dutch families flood Texel, the Waddeneilanden ferries, indoor pools like De Waterakkers in Heemskerk, and family museums. If you want the region to yourself, come the week before or the week after. If you want the country at its most domestic, come during — Texel guesthouses double to €160-190 and the 09:30 TESO ferry from Den Helder can sell out by 08:00.
Amsterdam is barely affected because international visitors are still few. Museums remain quiet weekday mornings. Book Anne Frank two weeks ahead rather than the usual six, and walk into the Rijksmuseum at 10:15 with a five-minute queue.
Rooms, food and daylight
Amsterdam 3-stars run €90-120, canal 4-stars €150-200. Haarlem sits at €95, Alkmaar €75. Expect 9-10 hours of daylight by month's end, with sunset moving from 17:20 to 18:05. Bergen and Egmond aan Zee remain quiet, and the walking dune paths through the Noordhollands Duinreservaat are at their bleakest and best — bring waterproof boots, the sandy tracks turn to soup.
This is stamppot and erwtensoep season. Café Loetje in Overveen, the Jopenkerk in Haarlem, and any brown café in the Jordaan will do a proper snert (pea soup with rookworst) for €8-11. The Zaanse Schans is open but the working windmills only spin on windy days — check Zaans Museum's site the morning of.

Will I see any tulips in February?
Not outdoors. The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam sells forced tulips year-round, and the FloraHolland auction in Aalsmeer (just outside Noord-Holland) shows the trade. Field tulips start early April at the earliest, usually mid-April.
Is Texel worth the trip in February?
Yes if you want cliffs of dune, empty beach and seal spotting at Ecomare — the seals are indoors. No if you expect restaurants and shops in De Koog to be open; most reopen for Easter. Avoid the crokusvakantie week unless you book two months ahead.
