The daylight peak
The summer solstice falls 21 June, with civil twilight lasting until nearly 23:00 in the north of the province. This is the month to cycle the polders around Broek in Waterland at 20:00 with full light, or walk from Marken across the causeway to Monnickendam in the evening. Terraces stay full until dark. The Vondelpark hosts free open-air theatre most weekends.
Weather is variable but generally kind: 18-22°C highs, 12-15°C lows, occasional heatwaves pushing 28°C. Rain falls on about a third of days but often in evening thunderstorms after warm afternoons. The North Sea reaches 15-17°C — genuinely swimmable for a summer holiday. Zandvoort, Bergen aan Zee and IJmuiden fill on any 22°C+ weekend.

Texel jumps sharply in the last week of June as Dutch schools break: €140-190 for guesthouses, book two months ahead. Pinksteren (Whit weekend) falls late May or early June and functions as a mini-peak. The Volendam-Marken ferry runs hourly, the Zaanse Schans is mobbed on weekends, and Alkmaar's Friday cheese market gets very crowded from 09:30 — arrive by 09:15 or accept back-of-crowd views. Circuit Zandvoort's Historic Grand Prix usually falls in early June.

When does Dutch summer holiday actually start?
The northern region (Noord-Holland) breaks around 4 July 2026 for six weeks. So June is still school-term for most of the country. This makes weekdays notably quieter than July — a real reason to prefer June if you can.
Is the water warm enough to swim in the IJsselmeer?
Yes, from mid-June onwards, usually 18-20°C by month's end. Hoorn's Julianapark beach and the Enkhuizen swim area are popular. The IJsselmeer is fresh water since the Afsluitdijk closed in 1932, so no salt sting and clearer than the North Sea.
