Where to stay in Muiden: castle village on the IJmeer

Muiden has only a handful of hotels and B&Bs at €100-150, the Muiderslot is a 5-minute walk from the harbour, and Amsterdam is 20 minutes by bus 320.

Who Muiden suits

Muiden is a small fortified harbour village where the Vecht meets the IJmeer, dominated by the Muiderslot — the best-preserved medieval castle in the Netherlands and a genuinely rewarding visit. It suits travellers who want a quiet overnight close to Amsterdam without paying Amsterdam prices, and sailors using the marina. Combined with Naarden 6 km east, it makes a proper two-day fortress and history trip.

It doesn’t suit anyone who needs choice — there are perhaps three or four places to sleep in the village itself. And it doesn’t suit train travellers; Muiden has no station, so you rely on bus 320 from Amsterdam Amstel, which runs every 15 minutes at peak.

Practicalities

Everything in Muiden is walkable — village to castle is 5 minutes, harbour to bus stop is 3 minutes. The Herengracht and the streets around the church are the most attractive. Muiderberg 3 km east has a beach on the IJmeer and a few more accommodation options.

Good to know

Questions answered

Is the Muiderslot open year-round?

The castle is open daily April through October and Wednesday to Sunday in winter. Check the falconry demonstration times if travelling with kids.

Can I combine Muiden with Naarden?

Yes — bus 320 links them in 15 minutes, or cycle 6 km on the fietspad along the IJmeer. Do both in a single day easily.
