Why September works so well
Dutch schools return around 17 August in the northern region, so the coast empties from the third week of August onwards. September delivers most of the summer's daylight (13 hours falling to 11 by month's end), warm sea water (17-19°C, the year's peak comes in late August/early September), and prices that soften noticeably. The weather is often more stable than July — long stretches of dry weeks, low wind mornings on the polders.
Downside: sunset moves from 20:30 to 19:15 across the month, so evenings shorten fast. Rain falls on roughly a third of days, often heavier bursts than summer showers. The North Sea gets its first proper autumn storm most years around the equinox.
Prices and events
Amsterdam 3-stars €140-180 weekdays, €190-250 weekends. Canal 4-stars €210-290. Haarlem €120-150, Alkmaar €95-125. Texel drops to €110-160 midweek. Zandvoort €120-160 outside Formula 1 weekend (which usually falls last weekend August or first September — check exact date).
Open Monumentendag on the second weekend of September opens hundreds of normally-private historic buildings free across the province: canal houses in Amsterdam, warehouses in Zaandam, hofjes in Haarlem. Genuinely the best free thing the region does. Sail Amsterdam happens every five years — the next is 2025, then 2030, so 2026 skips it. Alkmaar's cheese market runs its final Fridays; last market usually last Friday of September.

Is September good for cycling the polders?
It's arguably the best month. Long light evenings, quiet roads (kids back in school), and the fields have that late-summer stubble look. The 25km loop from Broek in Waterland via Ransdorp, Holysloot and Durgerdam is superb. Rent from MacBike or Yellow Bike in central Amsterdam.
Will beach restaurants still be open?
Yes through September, patchier in October. Zandvoort's boulevard restaurants and Bergen aan Zee's beach pavilions run to end of September at least. IJmuiden's harbour restaurants stay open year-round. Texel's De Koog thins out from mid-September.
