Who Haarlem suits
Haarlem is the obvious pick if you want a real Dutch town rather than a theme-park version and don’t mind commuting 15 minutes into Amsterdam. The historic core around Grote Markt is compact — you can walk from the station to the Frans Hals Museum, the Sint-Bavokerk and half a dozen good restaurants in under 12 minutes. Families like it because streets are calmer, prams roll easily and Zandvoort beach is 10 minutes further on the same train line.
It doesn’t suit people who want nightlife past midnight or who plan to be in Amsterdam until 2 a.m. — the last direct train back is around 01:00 on weekends. Business travellers with meetings in Zuidas should look at Amsterdam Zuid instead.
Where in Haarlem
Stay inside the singel (the ring canal) and everything is walkable. The area around Botermarkt and Nieuwe Groenmarkt is my usual pick — quiet at night, two minutes from the main square. Near the station is convenient but blander. Avoid the industrial strip east of the Spaarne unless price is the only factor.
