Enkhuizen is where you go to understand what the Netherlands lost when the Zuiderzee was dammed off in 1932 and became the IJsselmeer. The Zuiderzeemuseum, split between an indoor collection and an open-air village of 130 relocated historic buildings, is the best folk museum in the country and worth the whole trip. You reach the open-air part by a small ferry from behind the train station — the ferry is included in the ticket and is part of the theatre. Allow four hours minimum, six if you want to see the eel smokehouse actually working.
The old town outside the museum is compact and quiet, with the Drommedaris tower guarding the harbour entrance and streets of gabled 17th-century houses that lean at all angles. At 9pm on a Wednesday in October the streets are empty and only a few cafés on Westerstraat are open. In July and August the harbour fills with Dutch sailors on holiday and the town becomes lively in a specifically Dutch, family-boating way. If you want cocktail bars, this is not the place.

The old town inside the harbour ring is the only place to be — Westerstraat, Breedstraat, and around the Zuider Havendijk. Expect $90-$150 for a canal-side room in a heritage building. Hotel Restaurant Van der Werff on Westerstraat is the historic option. Cheaper places near the station drop to $70 but you lose the atmosphere and gain a walk. In summer, book at least three weeks ahead — the town has fewer than 15 hotels and the boating crowd claims most rooms.

Getting there & around
Start at the Drommedaris, walk the Zuider Havendijk with the botters moored below, cross into Vissersdijk (fishermen's dyke — the houses used to be waterfront), thread through Bocht and Havenweg to the Compagnieshaven, then back via Westerstraat past the Westerkerk and the wonderful crooked houses at the Melkmarkt corner.
Trains from Amsterdam Centraal to Enkhuizen run every 30 minutes, 62 minutes direct, $12. This is the end of the line — the tracks stop at the harbour. From Schiphol allow 80 minutes with a change at Sloterdijk or Amsterdam Zuid. The old town is a 5-minute walk from the station. In summer, ferries connect to Stavoren (1h20, $18) and Urk (1h30, $18) across the IJsselmeer — a proper way to reach Friesland or Flevoland.
