Volendam is a Catholic fishing village that turned itself into a tourist product a hundred years ago and never looked back. The Doolhof and dyke-top houses in painted wooden facades are genuinely picturesque, the fishermen's costumes are still worn by a handful of older residents, and the harbour with its wooden botters is exactly the postcard. It is also mobbed with tour groups from 10am to 5pm and completely dead by 7pm. Bus 316 from Amsterdam Centraal runs every 15 minutes and takes 25 minutes; half the passengers are day-tripping.
The play here is to stay overnight and see the town in the evening after the buses have left. Between 6pm and 10pm the dyke belongs to residents, a handful of hotel guests, and the cats. The seafood is decent (eel smokehouse Smit-Bokkum on Slobbeland is the real deal) if not cheap. This suits couples wanting a picturesque one-nighter. It does not suit anyone expecting nightlife, museums, or authenticity — this is a working village performing itself, and once you accept that it is enjoyable.
Where to stay in Volendam
On the dyke (Haven, Havendijk) is the only place worth being — you get harbour views and the village mostly to yourself in the evenings. Expect $110-$180. Hotel Spaander is the historic option, artists' rooms with murals and a piano bar. Cheaper places behind the dyke on Julianaweg drop to $85-$110 but you miss the point. Avoid staying in adjacent Edam and calling it Volendam — it is a 20-minute walk between them.

- Marken ferry across the GouwzeeFerry Marken Express from Volendam harbour, $15 return, every 30-45 minutes April-October. 30-minute crossing. Marken is a former island village, wooden houses on stilts, less touristy than Volendam. Two hours there is plenty.
- Volendams MuseumZeestraat 41, $6, a small local museum with the fishing costumes, painted-house history, and a room of paintings by the 'Volendam School' artists who came here in the 1900s. Closes 4pm. Skippable but pleasant on a rainy hour.

Getting there & around
Start at the harbour, walk the Haven and Havendijk with the wooden facades and moored botters on your right, cut inland into the Doolhof (the 'maze' — narrow lanes of tiny fishermen's houses behind the dyke), out via Meerzijde, back onto the dyke at the northern end past the fish stalls, and finish at Smit-Bokkum for lunch.
Bus 316 (EBS) from Amsterdam Centraal (bus platform on the north side) runs every 15 minutes, 25-30 minutes, $6. Also bus 315 direct from Amsterdam Noord metro. From Schiphol change at Amsterdam Centraal, 55 minutes total. Ferry Marken Express to Marken from Volendam harbour, $15 return, seasonal. No train — nearest station is Purmerend, and the bus is faster than train-plus-bus. Parking in Volendam is $12 a day at the harbour lot.
