April in Noord-Holland: peak tulips and the first crowds

The tulip window

Field tulips have a two-week peak, usually 15-25 April, though it shifts a week either way with the weather. The best fields are actually just south of Noord-Holland in the Bollenstreek (Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout), but the polders east of Alkmaar and around Anna Paulowna also bloom, later and less densely. Rent a bike in Lisse or Haarlem — the fields are meant to be cycled through, not driven past. Farmers dislike people walking into rows; stick to the edges.

Keukenhof peaks the same fortnight and gets brutal on weekends — 40,000 visitors on a Saturday. Go Tuesday or Wednesday at 08:00 opening. Fields are free and open 24 hours if you accept that the flowers get topped for the bulb harvest as soon as they peak, and by 5 May most are just green stalks.

King's Day and the price shock

Koningsdag, 27 April, is genuinely the busiest day of the Amsterdam year. The whole city wears orange, the canals fill with boats, the vrijmarkt (free market) lets anyone sell junk on the street, and rooms cost double or triple normal — expect €280-450 for a mid-range Amsterdam room, sold out six months ahead. If you have not booked by February, stay in Haarlem, Zaandam or Alkmaar and take the train in.

The rest of April: €130-180 for Amsterdam 3-stars, €200-280 for canal 4-stars. Highs of 10-15°C, occasional 18°C days, and 13-14 hours of daylight. The Circuit Zandvoort hosts events most weekends. National Museum Weekend usually falls the first weekend — many museums are free or €5.
