Day trips from Amsterdam, ranked

The 8 best day trips within Noord-Holland — plus 2 you shouldn’t bother with.

2026-04-16

The must-dos

1) Haarlem — 15-min train, best-preserved Golden Age city. 2) Zaanse Schans — 20 min, windmills, go early. 3) Volendam + Marken + Edam combo — bus 316 loops all three, $28 day pass. 4) Alkmaar — 40 min, cheese market Fridays. 5) Muiden with Muiderslot castle — 30 min, best moated castle in the country.

Worth it if you have time

6) Hoorn and Enkhuizen — Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen is genuinely great, $22 entry. 7) Texel ferry-day — very long day but doable, better as an overnight. 8) Bergen + Egmond aan Zee — beach day and artist village combo. All doable from Amsterdam with $12-$25 in transport.

Skip these

The 'Giethoorn day trip' offered by every tour bus — Giethoorn is in Overijssel, 2 hours each way, and 4 hours on-site sounds nice until you realize it's overrun with the exact tour buses you came on. Not worth it as a day trip. Keukenhof: only worth it late April through mid-May, not year-round as some booking sites imply.

Good to know

Questions answered

Can I do two day trips in one day?

Yes — Zaanse Schans + Volendam is the classic combo, doable in 8 hours with a $32 Waterland day ticket.

Do I need to book tour buses?

For the classics no — public transport is faster and half the price. Book only for Keukenhof shuttle from Schiphol.
