Who Bergen suits
Bergen is the polished, arty, slightly pricey option on the Noord-Holland coast — a leafy village of villas that has drawn painters and Amsterdammers since the early 20th century. It suits couples who want dunes and forest walks, dinner at a proper restaurant and a comfortable bed within cycling distance of the beach. Bergen aan Zee, five kilometres west, is the actual seaside village with the sand.
It doesn’t suit budget travellers — this is one of the more expensive corners of Noord-Holland outside Amsterdam. It also doesn’t suit non-drivers who want easy Amsterdam access; you’re an hour each way including the bus to Alkmaar.
