December in Noord-Holland: light festivals, Christmas markets and the New Year's Eve premium

The two Decembers
December in Noord-Holland is really two markets. The first three weeks are quiet-to-moderate: Amsterdam 3-stars €100-140, canal 4-stars €160-220, Haarlem €95-125, Alkmaar €75-95. Weekends run 20-30% higher because of the Light Festival crowds. The last week — 27 December to 2 January — is the year's third peak after King's Day and F1. Amsterdam mid-range rooms hit €280-450 for New Year's Eve, sold out by October.
Weather: 3-7°C highs, 1-4°C lows, rain on half the days, the odd snow flurry, occasional canal skating (rare, but 2010, 2012 and 2018 all delivered). Daylight is punishing — 08:45 sunrise to 16:30 sunset. Museums close early on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December; the Rijksmuseum shuts entirely on 25 December.

Amsterdam Light Festival runs the whole month (28 November 2026 to 17 January 2027). Christmas markets in Haarlem's Grote Markt, Alkmaar, and the Museumplein ice rink and market — smaller than German markets but pleasant for an hour. New Year's Eve is genuinely intense. Public fireworks are legal (though the government keeps tightening rules) and Amsterdam's centre gets loud and smoky from 21:00 to 02:00 on 31 December. Locals mostly stay in with oliebollen and champagne. If you want the party, Museumplein hosts a public countdown; if you want quiet, Bergen or Naarden are calm alternatives.

Second Christmas Day (26 December) sees supermarkets and most shops closed, though tourist restaurants and museums open. New Year's Day is quiet — supermarkets closed, some cafés open from 12:00, museums generally open from 12:00 or 13:00. Plan food ahead.
Is Christmas Day worth spending in Amsterdam?
Only if you like empty streets and closed museums. Restaurants require reservations weeks ahead — hotels are your safest bet for Christmas dinner, at €65-120 per person for a set menu. The city is genuinely lovely and quiet, but it's a slow day.
