IJmuiden is a working port at the mouth of the North Sea Canal, with the massive sea locks (the largest in the world when the new lock opened in 2022) that lift ships between the sea and Amsterdam's port. It is also the departure point for the DFDS overnight ferry to Newcastle in England, which is why many British travellers know it. The town itself is functional and postwar (bombed and rebuilt after 1945) with a busy fishing harbour, a wide beach, and a promenade.
This suits ferry travellers (obvious), industrial-tourism enthusiasts (the locks and Tata Steel next door), and beach-goers who want something less resort-y than Zandvoort. It does not suit anyone wanting Dutch heritage or charm — that is Haarlem, ten kilometres inland. One night is right for most people; two if you want to see the locks in operation and combine with the beach. The Kop van de Haven area is where fresh fish is landed and sold, and the fish and chips at the harbour stalls are excellent.

- IJmuiden aan Zee beachWide, clean, uncrowded sand. Beach pavilions Noordpier and Zuidpier at the two breakwaters. Windy — this is a working coast, not a resort. The Zuidpier walk out to sea is 3 km round trip and dramatic in any weather.
- Fish stalls at the harbourKop van de Haven, Halkade — fresh fish auction area with retail stalls. Vishandel Zwiers is the local pick. Fresh kibbeling $8, herring $5, fried plaice $12. Open 10am-6pm, best around lunchtime.
- Fort Island IJmuidenDuin en Kruidbergerweg — an artificial fort island south of the town, part of the Stelling van Amsterdam UNESCO line. Open weekends April-October, $9. Combine with a beach visit; the Zuidpier walk connects.

Start at the Kop van de Haven for a fresh herring, walk south past the fish auction to Kennemerboulevard, out along the Zuidpier breakwater with sea on both sides, back onto the beach and north to the pavilions at IJmuiden aan Zee, and inland via De Ruyterplein to the DFDS terminal viewing area.
No train — the nearest station is Beverwijk (10 min bus 82) or Haarlem (25 min bus 75 or 82). From Amsterdam Centraal, bus 82 direct, 40-50 minutes, $6. From Schiphol, train to Haarlem then bus 75/82, total 65 minutes. DFDS ferry to Newcastle departs 5:30pm daily. Local buses cover the town but IJmuiden aan Zee to the ferry terminal is a 20-minute walk or 5-minute taxi.

Foot passengers should check in 90 minutes before departure (departs 5:30pm, arrive by 4pm). Cars 60 minutes minimum. The terminal has a decent café and duty-free. If you are coming from Amsterdam Centraal by bus 82, allow 60 minutes for the bus plus 20 for the terminal walk — leave Amsterdam by 2:30pm to be safe.
Is IJmuiden worth visiting if I am not taking the ferry?
For the locks and the strange dune-industry-beach combination, yes — one day is enough. For anything else, probably not. Combine with Wijk aan Zee (next door), the Tata Steel viewpoint, and lunch at the fish stalls. Or just come for the DFDS ferry as a memorable way of leaving the Netherlands.
