Boutique Hotel Staats near the station has 39 rooms, art-nouveau styling and prices from €135. Ambassador Hotel is old-fashioned but genuinely charming, family-run since 1927, and rooms from €110 make it one of Haarlem's best-value stays.
Hotel Amadeus on Grote Markt puts you literally on the main square — 15 rooms, from €125, and you eat breakfast looking at the Sint-Bavo. It's not designed to within an inch of its life, but the location is unbeatable and the rooms are properly quiet given where they are.
The rest and the misses
Stempels Hotel occupies the former Enschedé printing works — 17 rooms, industrial-heritage feel, from €145. Brass Boer Hotel is newer and slicker with just 8 rooms above a restaurant, from €175. Golden Tulip Lion D’Or is a solid business-hotel choice near the station but isn’t really boutique despite the marketing.
Skip Ibis Haarlem and Van der Valk Haarlem — both fine, both chain, neither boutique. Haarlem's real advantage over Amsterdam is that you can walk everywhere in 15 minutes: the Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum, Grote Markt and the station are all inside a compact centre. Trains to Amsterdam Centraal run every 10 minutes and take 15.
