Amsterdam is the default answer and also the wrong one if you book blindly on Damrak between Centraal Station and Dam Square. That strip is a tourist tax: $180 a night for a room the size of a wardrobe above a waffle shop that plays house music until 2am. Walk ten minutes west into the Jordaan or south to De Pijp and the same money gets you a proper canal-view room with a real breakfast. At 9pm the Red Light District smells like weed and boiled beer; the Jordaan smells like frying onions and jenever.
This suits first-timers who want the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh, and a canal cruise ticked off in three days. It does not suit anyone allergic to bachelor parties, e-bikes ridden by tourists who cannot ride bikes, or paying $8 for a Heineken. If you want quiet Dutch charm, go to Haarlem or Hoorn and day-trip in on the intercity — it takes 15 minutes from Haarlem and you sleep for half the price.

Best streets: Prinsengracht and Bloemgracht in the Jordaan for canal quiet ($140-$220), Ceintuurbaan and Van Woustraat in De Pijp for cafés and the Albert Cuyp market ($110-$180), or Sarphatipark edges for boutique places. Avoid anything on Damrak, Rokin, or within two blocks of Leidseplein unless you like drunk stag parties at 3am. Oost around Javastraat is the current value zone — $90-$130, tram 14 to the centre in twelve minutes, and actual Dutch people live there.

Start at Westerkerk on Prinsengracht, cross to Bloemgracht (the prettiest canal nobody photographs), zigzag north through Egelantiersgracht and Brouwersgracht — the crooked houses on Brouwersgracht at the Prinsengracht corner are the most-photographed in the city. End at Café Papeneiland for apple pie.
From Schiphol, the train to Centraal Station runs every 10 minutes, takes 17 minutes, and costs about $6.50. Do not take a taxi ($60+). Inside the city, buy an OV-chipkaart or use contactless on trams — flat $1.80 boarding plus distance. Trams 2, 12, and 14 cover most tourist ground. Bikes rent for $12-$15 a day at MacBike; if you have never cycled in traffic, do not start here.
