The urban views
1. A’DAM Lookout, Amsterdam Noord — 20 floors up, 360° over the IJ and the whole city, €16.50 and rarely queued out of season. The over-the-edge swing is a gimmick you can ignore. 2. Westerkerk tower — climb the 85 metres for €10, guided only, six people at a time, and you get canal-belt geometry from directly above. 3. OBA Oosterdok rooftop, seventh floor of the central library — free, huge terrace, closes at 22:00 and has beer.
These three all beat Dam Square at ground level. The library rooftop is the sleeper: it costs nothing, opens until late, and the view over Centraal to Noord is the one you actually want on a summer evening.
The landscape views
4. Top of the highest dune in the Schoorlse Duinen (54 m) — the highest natural point in Noord-Holland, 25 minutes' walk from Schoorl village, and on a clear day you can see Texel. 5. Alkmaar's Grote Kerk tower during Saturday climbs — the whole flat polder laid out geometrically. 6. The dyke top at Marken — you’re only 5 metres up but the IJsselmeer stretches to the horizon, and in winter with ice fringes it's the most Dutch view in the province.
I’ve ranked Schoorl fourth over the Grote Kerk because the effort is nearly free and the view is genuinely rare — the Netherlands has almost no natural elevation, and this one hill costs nothing to climb.

Is A’DAM Lookout worth €16.50?
If it's your first trip and the weather is clear, yes. If it's overcast, skip it and use the free OBA library rooftop instead — same city, one-tenth the price.
Can you climb the Westerkerk without booking?
Only in principle. April to October it's tour-only in groups of six, and slots often go by mid-morning. Book on the day at the church door or online.
