Noord-Holland in 3 days on a budget

Three days at under $75 a day including bed, food and transport — the trick is where you sleep and eating like a Dutch student.

Sleep for $35 a night

Skip Amsterdam center. ClinkNOORD across the IJ (free ferry from Centraal) charges $32-40 for dorm beds and has a solid bar. Stayokay Vondelpark runs $38 for dorms with breakfast. If you want a private room under $70, look at The Student Hotel Amsterdam City or CityHub for pod-style singles.

Eat under $15 a day

Breakfast at Albert Heijn to Go — a stroopwafel and coffee is $2.50. Lunch at any FEBO wall-vending automat: kroket in a bun is $3. For proper meals, hit Wok to Walk ($9), Maoz Vegetarian falafel ($8) or the food court at Foodhallen where slices, bao and pizza run $5-10.

Supermarket dinners work: Albert Heijn premade sandwiches are $4, and a bottle of Dutch beer at Dirk van den Broek is $1. Eat by a canal, it's free.

See for free or cheap

Vondelpark, the Begijnhof, the Jordaan and NDSM-werf cost nothing. The Rijksmuseum garden is free — the interior is $25. The Stedelijk is free on your birthday with ID. Museumkaart at $85 pays off after four museums if you can spread visits across a longer trip.

Day 3, take a free GVB ferry to NDSM, walk the street art, then ride tram 26 back through IJburg for water views. Total cost of day 3 with a $9.40 day pass and $12 in food: $21.40.

Questions answered

What is the cheapest hostel in Amsterdam?

ClinkNOORD and Hans Brinker consistently sit at $28-35 for dorm beds. Book two weeks ahead in summer or prices double.

Are supermarkets open on Sunday?

Yes, most Albert Heijn locations open 8:00-22:00 daily including Sundays. Some smaller shops close Sunday morning.

Is the I amsterdam City Card worth it on a budget?

Only if you plan four-plus museums in a day. At $70 for 24 hours it is faster to buy individual tickets for two museums.

Can I drink tap water?

Yes, it is excellent and free. Bring a bottle — restaurants will refill it, though some charge $1 for the service.
