Zaanse Schans is an open-air museum village with 6 working windmills, cheese and clog demonstrations, and around 2 million visitors a year. Go at 9am or after 4pm — midday is packed. Entry is free but individual mills cost $6-$8. Combine with the Zaans Museum ($16). Skip the clog-carving demo unless you have kids under 10.

The Inntel Hotel Amsterdam Zaandam is unmissable — the stacked-green-house facade is the city's landmark. Rooms $140-$210, pool, direct train to Amsterdam every 10 minutes. Cheaper: Fletcher Hotel Zaandam at around $115. Both beat any equivalent Amsterdam center hotel on price by a wide margin.
Beyond the windmills
Zaandam center is a real Dutch working town with a large Saturday market, decent restaurants along Gedempte Gracht, and the Czaar Peterhuisje — the tiny wooden house Peter the Great stayed in during his shipbuilding studies. Worth 20 minutes.
