About Broek in Waterland
Broek in Waterland is a village of about 2,500 people ten kilometres north of Amsterdam, known for painted wooden houses, tidy streets and a quiet atmosphere. It sits along a few canals with the Havenrak lake at its centre. The place has long been kept immaculately clean, and 18th-century travellers noted streets scrubbed with sand and houses in soft pastel greys and greens. Bus 315 from Amsterdam Centraal takes fifteen minutes. There are essentially no attractions beyond the village itself, one pancake house, and access to the Waterland polder for cycling. It is a common bike stop between Amsterdam and Volendam or Marken, with a few B&Bs for overnight stays. Start at the Dorpsstraat bus stop, wander past Havenrak and Nieuwland, and cycle out via Molengouw onto the polder dyke.
