The price reality
Amsterdam hotel prices for the night of 26 or 27 April 2026 are 2.5-3.5x normal. A €120 room becomes €330. A €200 canal-house room becomes €580. Booking windows are early: the best-value places sell out by December for the following April. If you’re reading this in February for April, expect either €400+ for anything central or a hostel dorm.
The premium is worst in the canal ring, the Jordaan and De Pijp. It's slightly softer in Amsterdam-Noord (across the ferry), Amsterdam-Oost, and near Amstel station. Zuidas hotels drop faster after King's Day but stay expensive on the day itself because business travellers who unknowingly booked pay whatever the sign says.
The Haarlem-Zaandam-Alkmaar strategy
Skip Amsterdam entirely for the night. Haarlem is 15 minutes by train, has its own excellent Koningsdag celebration on the Grote Markt, and rooms run €140-180 instead of €330+. Zaandam (12 minutes to Centraal) sits at €130-170. Alkmaar (35 minutes) at €95-130. All three have direct trains running late — NS runs an altered but frequent service.
If you must be in Amsterdam that night, look at Amsterdam-Noord: the NDSM ferry runs all night, the area has its own party, and rooms are €200-250 rather than €400. Pick something within 10 minutes' walk of the Buiksloterweg or NDSM ferry. Book a room that includes breakfast — cafés are mobbed on the 28th.
