North Holland packs two very different holidays into one province. Amsterdam draws the crowds with its canals, museums and nightlife, and it holds the biggest choice of places to stay by far. But the coast and the old towns are just as rewarding: Haarlem, Zandvoort and Egmond Aan Zee put beach and city within easy reach, while Volendam, Marken and Enkhuizen show the old Zuiderzee fishing culture at first hand. Zaandam and Alkmaar are handy, lived-in towns, and Texel is the island escape at the top of the province.

In North Holland the split is simple. Three-star hotels are the mainstay everywhere, and they cover most places along the coast and in the smaller towns. Four- and five-star hotels are much thinner on the ground: Amsterdam has 23 five-star hotels and the largest overall stock, while Haarlem and Egmond Aan Zee have 2 each. Choose a three-star if you want a straightforward base in a village or resort, and a four- or five-star if you are staying in Amsterdam or want a higher-class address in Haarlem or Egmond Aan Zee.
Amsterdam is the obvious first base, with 59 hotels and 23 of them five-star, so the widest choice of class and location. Haarlem, with 28 hotels, is a quieter alternative and still close to the coast and the capital.
Amsterdam leads on family-friendly hotels with 30, followed by Haarlem with 22 and Zandvoort with 20. Egmond Aan Zee has 10 and Texel 3, both good if you want beach and space rather than city streets.
Amsterdam has 23 five-star hotels, far more than anywhere else. Haarlem and Egmond Aan Zee have 2 each. No other place in North Holland has a five-star hotel.
Parking is widest in Amsterdam, with 41 hotels offering it, then Bergen with 28, Alkmaar and Egmond Aan Zee with 20 each, and Den Helder with 19. Texel has 5 and Velsen-Zuid 2, so the island and the smaller stops need a little more planning.
Amsterdam is in a class of its own with 59 hotels. Behind it come Zandvoort with 30, Alkmaar with 30, Bergen with 30, Haarlem with 28 and Egmond Aan Zee with 29. Volendam, Texel, Naarden and Marken have only a handful each.
